Muslim creatives have made huge strides in telling authentic stories on screen, and we’re seeing more new Muslim characters in mainstream television and film.

But these new characters and storylines have brought about their own set of challenges and questions from within the community.

With such a broad range of experiences and perspectives, it’s impossible for every American Muslim to identify with every character on screen. But can these diverse characters and stories open our perspectives to the diversity of our own communities? How do Muslim creatives balance the issue of “representation” with the content demands of the entertainment industry, and how do they make tough decisions on storylines under that pressure? We’ll discuss a few current television shows and films in answering these and other questions about our communities on screen.
